Getting to know the business.

Author Visits

Arts in education in schools is a tremendous opportunity for children of diverse backgrounds to be exposed to music, art, theater, storytelling, dance and literacy. Most booking agencies that represent arts in education presenters don't normally represent book authors. In the arts in education field authors are separated into their own group and serve a specific educational need in the school environment.

Through the years I have tried to change the perception of how coordinators view author visits, so that I would be included in the arts in education conversation.  I have been very successful at it, so much so that my "A Writer's Journey" program is now being booked and sold to schools by one of the country's biggest arts in education providers in the business, Young Audiences.  My marketing material, and marketing campaigns promote this concept, as I feel that kids need to see writing from different perspectives.

.

The written word is intertwined with so many art forms. So, the thought of teaching kids about writing using a variety of creative arts made a lot of sense to me.

Those are my skills. Now, think about yours.

The information that I provide on this website is meant to guide you, because at the end of the day you have to use the skills that you bring to the table and that you are most comfortable with.

Be dynamic, be diverse, and be different

There are thousands of authors and illustrators vying for this work, but very few put on programs that move the needle. And to be frank, there are so many bad presenters, that it makes those purchasing what we offer reluctant buyers. And so, they should be.

Marketing Specialist

Because of buyers' anxiety, you have to become a marketing specialist. You have to have a good grasp on what schools are really looking for, what you do differently than others, and how you can tie the best of what your skill set is with what educators want their students to see.

Individuals Websites

Your website is the buyers first stop, and the key is to make it their last stop. You can do everything right and still lose the sale; that's part of the business. But you want to limit those loses. In most cases everything you do, is eventually going to lead them to your website, and if your website can't close the deal, you will always have trouble booking programs.
