Presentation Structuring

Step-by-step

Putting together a presentation can be a little overwhelming for some, and content becomes the first issue. What do you have to share with the students, and how will you present that content. We all have different skills which should allow you to create something unique and exciting. In my presentations I use every talent and life experience I can drum up, like:

  • My Books
  • Relevant Photos
  • Illustrations
  • Slide Shows
  • Readings
  • Skits
  • Music
  • Personal Experiences
  • Family
  • Life Lessons

But no matter what I chose to use in the moment, that choice has been made to serve a purpose. Each skit, song, and/or story I tell or book I act out, will all go on to serve as demonstrations of a writing skill that is talked about. My family is introduced as part of those topic talks, book by book and based on what part they played in inspiring the idea for it. All aspects in the program lead to some form literacy lesson.

Here is one of the formats that I use for the older kids,

and the type of audience involvement included.

Introduction, assembly rules and what I expect from them (It's short and to the point)

Topic Talk #1 Using Words / Demonstration - Includes singing / active interaction

Topic Talk #2 Rhyme / Demonstration - family, bookless reading, drumming / active interaction

Topic Talk #3 Using Life / Demonstration - personal info, bookless reading / passive interaction

Topic Talk #4 Small Moments / Demonstration - family, bookless reading / assigned interaction

Topic Talk #5 Detail / Demonstration - slides, family, lesson, song / passive & active interaction

Topic Talk #6 Conflict / Demonstration - skit & Interactive lesson / passive & active interaction.

All of this information takes about 60 minutes to present properly. If a school needs to be done in 45 minutes, I can remove any one of the topic talks to bring it in quicker.

Structure for K-2

Introduction, assembly rules and what I expect from them (It's short and to the point)

        #1 Monkey's / Singing / assigned active interaction

#2 Singing Competition / Singing / assigned active interaction

#3 Rhyme has Rythm / family, bookless reading, drumming / active interaction

#4 Daniel Dinasaur / family, bookless reading / passive and reactive interaction

       #5 Twinkle / Singing / active interaction

#6 Pirates Readers Theater / Theatrical Bookless Reading / active and assigned interaction

I have personal experiences that tie into all 1-6 activities, and whether or not I share those moments depends on the audience at that time. But I do have them ready to go if I want to use them.

All of the activities in this format take about 40 minutes to present properly. If a school needs to be done in less time, then I can remove any one of the activities to bring it in quicker.
