When compiling a mailing list or buying one, keep in mind that at most schools the person who is bringing in an author visit could be anyone. Most assume it's the librarians, or the parent associations, but in many cases it's neither. This makes marketing very challenging, and post card mailing more ineffective than it would normally be. Most people find that this method does not work as well as they thought that it would, and at 50 cents a stamp it can get costly. You will hit some targets, so it's worth doing, but be realistic about your expectations.
Compiling an e-mail list is one of the hardest things to do, and keeping it updated, is a grueling task. Each year the targets move, people leave jobs, the parent associations leaders come and go in two-year spans. A list of 5000 brand new contacts today, will be cut by in half in a two-year span. Contacts become unusable for many reasons and most can't be helped, but about 1/3 will leave for new jobs or retire. The ideal way to handle e-mail lists would be to have an update one each year, but if you are budget minded, it might get costly. But if you want to use them, I wouldn't stretch one past the two-year mark.
Buying a targeted email list is very expensive, and the cost range is based on the quality of the leads. A list of highly targeted leads can cost between 35 cents a lead and go as high as $1 dollar. In dollar terms it can seem like a lot of money.
If you have done the work, you've polished your presentation, you are confident that what you are selling has value, and your website is set up to show the coordinators that you are worth the value, then yes. Spending $2000, $3000, $4000 on a list that in turn might make you $30,000.00, $40,000.00, $50,000.00, or more, is a reasonable investment in your career.
